It’s hard for any guy to separate memories of his youth from two legendary magazines - Hot Rod and Playboy. Let’s face it, the reason we all wanted a hot car in high school was to be cool and get noticed by the ladies. For most of us, the cars like the ones in Hot Rod were unattainable at the time, not unlike the girls we saw on the pages of Playboy. But, a boy can dream, can’t he? Well, that was then and this is now. Many of us have made it a priority to get cars like the ones we saw in the pages of Hot Rod, but getting an invite to the Playboy Mansion, that’s just unattainable. Not anymore my friends! Mopar Collector’s Guide has made it possible for you to visit the place where beautiful girls frolic like butterflies.
So how did the Mopar community become blessed with such an opportunity? The Mopars At The Mansion story is a classic example of Mopar Collector’s Guide’s friends taking care of us. Dan Gibb was a longtime reader of MCG and called down to the office one day. The conversation ended with, “hey I work at the Playboy Mansion, the next time you guys are out on the West Coast and would like to come to the mansion, let me know.” Well, needless to say, we made sure we had an extra day in Los Angeles after the Fall Fling in 2004. Who would’ve thought that two Mopar geeks from Louisiana would ever get invited to the Playboy Mansion? We checked out the grotto, the pool area, viewed the exotic animals, and saw a crew of workers who were cleaning up after a party the night before. Looking over the open lawn, we had an epiphany; “we need to have a Mopar show here!”
Too stupid to know better, we dropped the inevitable question - what would it take to have an Mopar party at the Mansion? Surprisingly, rather than laughing us off the property, Dan said, “I don’t know, but I’ll find out.” Word came back that putting cars on the lawn was out of the question. It took two years, but Hef finally signed off on it.
THE PARTY
On October 20, 2006 Mopar Collector’s Guide magazine pulled off the impossible - a car show on the lawn of the Playboy Mansion! While certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, for those who have grown up appreciating hot bodies on cars, and girls, it was truly a chance of a lifetime. As the sun went down over Beverly Hills that Friday night, four hundred and three fanatics boarded shuttles to the Mopar show of the year - Mopars at the Mansion. The partiers out there may like the fact that Mopars at the Mansion was hands-down the wildest car show in the world, but when you strip away the big boobies and free flowing alcohol, what you’re left with is a direct connection to corporate America via the media. As I stated earlier, I know the Playboy Mansion may not be everyone’s cup-of-tea, but what Playboy does is open the doors and eyes of Hollywood to a product - be it an energy drink or Mopars. Most of us are into Mopars why? Because we either saw them when we were growing up rolling down the streets or on television and movies. Now we’re certainly not advocating youngsters be exposed to the goings on at the Playboy Mansion, but if you want to keep Mopars on camera, Playboy offers a direct connection to the media and film industry that the youth of America eats up like breakfast cereal.
No less than five television and radio broadcast crews showed up to cover one aspect or another of this first year show - that’s unprecedented! Hot Rod TV and Monster Radio conducted interviews, and Boyd Coddington’s American Hot Rod crew shot a portion of an episode on-site as the Speed Freaks crew spent the evening taking in all the action. In addition to the production crews that will introduce the world to this Mopar party, guests ran the gambit from Hollywood execs to the marketing and promotional arms of super corporations such as Sony and Camel cigarettes. There were also members of no less than four major rock bands in the crowd. Music videos are a great venue for introducing the world to old Mopars.
Mopars at the Mansion was first and foremost one hell of a party, but it was also about making sure the world never forgets that Mopars are the coolest cars around. Those who paid the ticket price not only ensured themselves a great time, but also did their part in furthering rock star status for our beloved Mopars! |
